As We Gather: Reflecting on the experience of the transfiguration of Jesus, Peter wrote in his Epistle, “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty” (2 Peter 1:16). The three disciples on the mountaintop, Peter, James, and John, were also “earwitnesses” as they heard the voice of God the Father say, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Matthew 17:5). As we listen to the proclamation of the Gospel, we become “earwitnesses” as well. The working of the Holy Spirit that shapes our witness as we share it with others leads us to be those who make manifest the fruit of the Spirit, including gentleness and self-control, in our lives.

Farewell to Alleluias When we gather for worship again, we will be observing Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of Lent, the day the Church begins the annual journey to the cross of Jesus. Worship during Lent is muted and quiet. Traditionally, Christians refrain from singing our most jubilant hymns during Lent, and also refrain from saying or singing "alleluia," which means, "praise the Lord." At the end of today's service, therefore, we will bid farewell to alleluia, symbolically preparing ourselves for the quieter days of Lent. In Christ, farewells are never forever. The alleluias will return at the Easter Vigil service!

Preparation for Worship: The Readings for our worship together next Sunday are: Genesis 3:1-21; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11.
